    Since the completion of my PhD thesis in 1999, my research work has been focused on two main topics: (1) in-situ thermal field analysis and heat source estimation during deformation of materials and (2) phenomena of deformation localization on various materials. These studies have two main objectives: (1) to develop of a unique and powerful experimental technique for simultaneous full-field spatial measurements of deformation and thermal variation and (2) to establish fundamental understanding of the scientific principles and mechanisms of the phenomena concerned. In this report, a summary of my main teaching duties and research tasks is first presented. Then, the experimental and analysis methodologies developed are explained. Finally, the main findings on the topics of deformation localization and heat source analysis are given.

    Deformation localization problems are an important research topic for both fundamental understanding of the deformation behavior and the production and application of engineering materials. Knowledge of these problems has profound impact on materials selection, forming process design, product quality control, and prediction of performances in application.

    To estimate the heat sources of thermal events during deformation, a method based on derivative estimations is used and applied to filtered thermal signals (through Fast Fourier Transform operation). This method requires working on shell samples (plates or tubes) in order to assume uniform temperature and heat source distribution in the thickness direction. Using this technique, a unique capability to quantitatively determine local rate of heat emission at any location has been developed. This provides effectively a virtual in-situ DSC measurement during mechanical testing, a unique and pioneering tool particularly useful for in-depth study of deformation-transformation coupling in materials.

    These tools and methodologies are applied to study six deformation localization problems: including Lüders bands, necking, PLC bands, localized damages, plastic localization in polycrystalline aluminum, and localized phase transformations in NiTi shape memory alloys (SMA). Full-field temperature and strain measurements allow to (i) increase the spatio-temporal characterization of deformation localization; (ii) elucidate, through heat source intensities, some deformation mechanisms and (iii) determine quantitatively some effects of thermomechanical couplings, e.g., plastic work-heat conversion and rate of heat generation associated with phase transformations,...
